Daniel's music program for the disabled

NEW YORK At age 7, it was guitar. At 10, the trumpet. And these days, at 25? Well, Daniel Trush will try his hand at anything.

"It makes me feel great to play music," he said. "It's brought so much joy to my life."

So much so that he started Daniel's Music Foundation.

"I'm not only the president, I'm also a member of Daniel's Music Foundation," he said.

In three years, there are now 90 members, men, women and children, all with disabilities, learning and playing music.

"We all have disabilities," member Yvonne Whitehurst said. "It's a way to release, that's what I get out of it."

Even Daniel sings. It's amazing, considering that 12 years ago, an aneurism left him in a coma. Music was one of his many therapies, and while his music classes may be therapeutic, he wants them to be fun.

Each student there feels a little star power, and that's quite rewarding for for Daniel's family, all of whom help the foundation. And Daniel hopes that even those who are shy or not musically inclined, will give it a try.

There are currently 21 classes, but they hope to expand to 25 classes in the spring. There is a waitlist, and the foundation runs totally on donations. It is open to those 3 years old and up.
