Possible mumps outbreak in Brooklyn

October 22, 2009 9:59:55 PM PDT
The city is investigating a possible mumps outbreak in Brooklyn.

The health department says at least 57 cases of confirmed or suspected cases of mumps have been reported in Borough Park.

Most of the patients, between the ages of 10 to 15, attended a camp in upstate New York last August.

The health department is asking doctors to be on the lookout for more cases. The mumps spreads though coughs and sneezes.

Symptoms include fever and swollen glands near the ears.

Officials said those infected should stay home five days from the onset of symptoms to prevent spreading the disease.
