Police release sketch of Rockaway rapist

A neighborhood is on edge in Queens-- as police step up patrols in their search for a sexual predator. Pastor Evan Gray is thoroughly disgusted by what happened behind his church, Macedonia Baptist.

A 25 year old woman got off the subway around 3:00 Tuesday morning at Beach 67th street. A man followed her, pulled out a gun and told her "...follow my instructions or I'll kill you" He dragged her behind the church and raped her.

"I'm in the house at night. Don't come outside because it's a bad neighborhood. Not my type of thing," Frances Marrero said.

"I leave the house at 6:00 a.m. It's very scary, didn't know what had happened," Sharon Kelly said.

It happened again around 5:21 Wednesday morning. Police believe the same man forced a young woman, at gunpoint, to the 6th floor landing of an apartment building on Beach 56th Street and raped her.

Police, both undercover and in uniform, have now saturated this neighborhood. Sources told Eyewitness News even officers from the narcotics unit are taking part in the search for the suspect.

Mike Capers was questioned last night.

"They said I fit the description of a serious crime, searched me, took my ID and that was pretty much it. They were all over the place last night. We couldn't go anywhere," Capers said.

Police hope the sketch leads to an arrest, saying they believe he lives in the neighborhood and that someone will eventually connect the dots.

Police believe both rapes were committed by the same man. They described the suspect as a black male, 20 to 25 years old, about 6-feet tall, 170 pounds, with an athletic build.

Additional foot patrols, as well as undercover detectives, are being sent to the Arverne section of the Rockaways.

Police say if you recognize the person in the sketch, give them a call at 1-800-577-TIPS.
