Anti-violence activist killed in Newark

Gunfire has claimed the life of an anti-violence activist in Newark. Yusuf Shabazz, 22, died in a barrage of gunfire that also injured another man at a city apartment complex.

The shooting happened around 11:30 Tuesday night at the Garden Spires, the twin high-rise complex on 1st Street.

Shabazz and a 21-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Both victims were rushed to University Hospital, where Shabazz died at 1:30 a.m.

The other victim was listed in stable condition. Police were not releasing his name.

Witnesses told Eyewitness News that Shabazz was not the intended target, but an innocent bystander. Police have not confirmed that informatino.

Police said that anyone with information should call the department's Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (877) NWK-TIPS or (877) NWK-GUNS.

Tips leading to arrests and indictments could result in cash rewards of up to $ 2,000 to people who provide information, or $1,000 per gun for calls into the gun hot line.
