It's believed a law signed on Long Island makes Suffolk County the first municipality in the nation to ban the sale of drop-side baby cribs. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy signed the local law on Tuesday. It bans the sale of any crib with a side that moves up and down. The law goes into effect in February.

Consumer advocates have complained for years about drop-side cribs, which have been linked to deaths.

Millions have been recalled over the past two years - including a major recall on Monday.

On Tuesday, Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum conceded the agency hasn't been acting as quickly as it should on crib safety problems.

A new, voluntary industry standard essentially eliminates the manufacture of drop-side cribs.
