Witnesses said the father ran after a mother and her two children and fired "multiple shots."
Edwin Gevara says he saw Edelmiro Gonzales, 54, shoot and kill seven-year-old Adrian Gonzales outside 460 Broadway. Then he helplessly watched the Dominican immigrant take off running after his 11 year old son and estranged wife.
"The father chased the mother. He caught her and shot her," Detective Lt. Ron humphrey said.
Johanna Gonzales, 31, was shot in the shoulder. Their other son, 11-year-old Edryn Gonzales, was shot in the neck. Both were listed in critical condition at Saint Joseph's Hospital.
An off-duty officer, who was in a car at a nearby fast food restaurant, saw what was happening and confronted Edelmiro Gonzales.
According to witnesses, the officer told Gonzales to stop and drop his weapon. When he refused the order, the officer shot him.
Gonzales died at the hospital, officials said.
Police cordoned off two blocks in the area and recovered some shell casings.
Police said Johanna Gonzales had temporary restraining order against her husband for an incident last September.
