Family members gathered at Jersey Shore University Medical Center overnight -- waiting to find out if the younger cousin Fernando Reyes would survive. The 16-year-old was shot twice in the chest.

"Shots rang out. People came out the bushes and they were robbed. Rickey was shot in the head and killed. My cousin right now is in surgery -- we're just waiting," victims' cousin Pedro Alvarez said.

The shooting happened around 11:45 Thursday night as the teens were walking home from the store. It appears to cops the two teens were ambushed and shot along a roadside leading into the Woodlake Manor Apartments.

The victims were apparently walking back from a nearby store when the shooting took place. The younger victim was able to get help from a Good Samaritan after being shot.

"He flagged down the vehicle and from what I understand...he was taken to the hospital by that party, said Deputy Chief Mole of the Ocean County Prosecutors office.

Friday morning police had the area near the complex shut off as the investigation continued.

As the investigation continues, there is still no word about the weapon involved or whether the shooter and victims were familiar with one another. The victims? family is still in shock over last night's tragic events.

"We are all supporting each other. It's a tight family..you know. You won't suspect this out of anything. It's a shocker, said Alvarez.

As, a result of the robbery, Reyes who is still at the hospital had his sneakers stolen.

Authorities say they're looking into the possibility that this could be gang related.
