A pedestrian was fatally struck on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle, closing the northbound lanes for more than five hours. Newscopter-7 was live over the scene.

Eyewitness News is told the man, in his 40s, was struck near the shoulder of the northbound lanes, near Webster Avenue, just before 12:15 a.m.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say the crash caused a chain reaction of accidents, and five vehicles were damaged in the smash up.

None of the drivers were seriously injured.

Police were investigating why the man pulled over on the side of the parkway. He did not have motor vehicle problems.
