Free electric car to drive around NYC

NEW YORK It's a street legal low speed vehicle.

"It even has a 17 digit vin number so you have to have a driver's license to drive it." says Colin Reilly.

Reilly from www.freeelectriccar.com says they turn heads.

The cars are completely legal on roads with a 35 mile per hour speed limit. They have turn signals, break lights, headlights. It's operates just like a regular car.

The electric car goes from 0 to 25 in 10 seconds, and takes eight hours to charge then your good for about 40 miles of driving.

"I think 80 percent of travel is within 10 miles of your home so this is an ideal means of transport to get to work, shops, it's easy parking," adds Reilly.

"You're not going to hurt anybody. I just think it's fabulous. With the bicycles you know people can get hurt. This seems a lot safer," said Alicia Feuer, a potential customer.

People are taking notice because under the stimulus bill signed by President Obama drivers get a tax credit.

So Colin's colleagues got the bright idea why not make the car free.

"The goal was to provide a car at no cost. We're the only ones doing it. It meant we had to work with manufacturer to re-engineer the car and lower our profit margin," adds Reilly.

Reilly's base vehicle goes for just under $6,500. The federal tax credit matches that price, making it free.
