Arrest in stabbing of mother and baby

JERSEY CITY Police say the suspect is a 41-year-old homeless man who was sleeping in the stairwell of the victim's apartment building.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said Monday that 41-year-old Martey J. Williams, whose last known address was Newark, has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and robbery. He was arrested on Sunday. Bail has been set at $1 million.

Police say 27-year-old Jackqueline Reyes was found by her husband, killed in her bed earlier last week. The couple's 9-month-old son, Ivan Reyes, Jr., was found in the bed, stabbed eight times. The baby remains in the hospital in critical condition.

A funeral mass for Reyes was held in Jersey City earlier Monday.

The suspect was seen on surveillance video around the building on the morning of the murder.

DeFazio said robbery was the motive in last Tuesday's attack, and a large amount of cash was reportedly taken from the home.
