"Free Shipping Thursday" at many online shops

If you're trying to mail a package in time for Christmas, there are only a few days left before a trip to the Post Office could cost you more than the gift itself. With eight shopping days left until Christmas, shoppers at the Queens Center Mall are walking around with heavy bags... And lighter wallets.

"You've got to shop at many stores to make everyone happy," said shopper Albert Ilyayev.

People still scouring the malls for discounts are in good company.

A recent survey showed that as of late last week, only 8.6% percent of people were done with their shopping, and 20% hadn't even started.

If you're a dawdler or a procrastinator, the next few days are the pivotal moment of the holiday season in order to ensure that your packages are shipped for arrival in time at the very latest, Christmas Eve.

This Thursday, December 17, more than 700 retailers are participating in 'Free Shipping Day,' in an effort to remind shoppers it's not too late to shop online.

"I thought about doing the online, free shipping, but I decided to come here because I like to touch everything before I buy it," explained shopper Fernando Bueno.

If you are shipping gifts, keep in mind that starting next week, you'll have to pay extra fees for rush shipping to get it there by Christmas.

If you act now, within the next couple of days, you should be alright. Just don't wait past the 20th, because then you're going to pay through the nose.
