Newark police exchange gunfire with man

NEWARK Police say the man was shot after police responded to his Leslie Street home on a report of a man with a gun just after 2 a.m.

Eyewitness News is told police ordered the man to put down his shotgun, but he ran into the house instead.

Gunfire was reportedly exchanged, and the man was shot in the side.

He was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

Police say they have yet to determine if the suspect's wound was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire.

There is an ongoing investigation.
