R.I.P. ferry service between Manhattan, Yonkers

YONKERS The service operated by New York Water Taxi had been kept running for five years through subsidies from federal, state and local agencies. Its last day will be Dec. 31.

Officials say that ridership never reached the levels they had expected.

About 80 to 90 riders a day took the 45-minute, 18-mile Hudson River trip at its peak.

New York Water Taxi says it will have to lay off eight employees.
