Water main break creates icy mess in Jersey City

The deep freeze quickly turned a water main break in New Jersey into an icy mess Monday morning. The 30-inch main broke just before 5 a.m., sending a river of water rushing down Route 440, near Communipaw Avenue in Jersey City.

The water froze almost instantly, creating a dangerous sheet of ice.

Jersey City officials say the north lanes of Route 440 have reopened to traffic, but southbound lanes from Route 1&9-Truck to Culver Avenue are expected to remain closed through the evening commute for roadway repairs and cleanup.

The rupture also left many without water and temporarily cut water pressure in nearby Bayonne.

Service has since been restored. Bayonne city spokesman Joe Ryan says there is no need for residents to boil their drinking water.
