A man being pursued by police after he fled a traffic stop was killed when his vehicle hit another car, injuring a woman and her young daughter. The incident began just before midnight Saturday, when Union Township police attempted to stop Leray Herring, a 37-year-old Newark resident.

But Herring sped off and officers followed him into Newark, said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Herring's vehicle soon collided with another car driven by a 35-year-old Elizabeth woman, whose 6-year-old daughter was in the back seat. All three were taken to University Hospital, where Herring died around 4 a.m.

The woman and her daughter, whose names were not released, remained hospitalized Sunday in satisfactory condition, Loriquet said. But further details were not disclosed.

Loriquet did not know what prompted the traffic stop. He said the prosecutor's office would review the incident, which is standard policy.
