A Nassau County police detective has been arrested on charges he crashed an unmarked police vehicle while on duty, then fled the scene. Detective Sgt. William Kaul was released without bail after pleading not guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges including leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury and official misconduct.

Police say Kaul, a 22-year veteran, crashed on the Long Island Expressway service road in North Hills at about 9:10 p.m. on Jan. 2.

A 58-year-old driver in the other vehicle struck a tree and sustained a minor leg injury. Police say Kaul left the crash scene without identifying himself. He was suspended without pay the next day.
