Police are investigating the apparent theft of a bronze eagle from a suburban New York bridge. Haverstraw police said Sunday they're investigating the disappearance of the 18-inch-tall eagle in the hamlet of Thiells.

The local American Legion commander noticed Saturday that it was missing.

Haverstraw Town Supervisor Howard Phillips says replacing the eagle would only cost $90 or $100. But he says that's not the point. The monument is on the Veteran's Memorial Bridge.

It was dedicated during a 2008 Veterans Day ceremony.
