Newark officer shot; investigation underway

NEWARK Police say the shooting incident occurred in Elizabeth near 927 Adams Avenue at approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning.

At this early junction in the investigation details are still being gathered.

Officials say two people were shot by Elizabeth police, who were responding to suspected vehicle theft.

One was pronounced dead at the scene, the other is at the hospital in "unknown" condition.

The officer, whose name is not being released at this time, was reportedly in front of the Adams Avenue home of his girlfriend when he was struck by gunfire by an unknown assailant.

Eyewitness News is told the officer suffered a wound to his left leg. He was transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment and released.

Police have no motive or suspects in this shooting. There are no further details available at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation which is being conducted by The Newark Police Department Internal Affairs in conjunction with the Union County Prosecutor's Office.
