Long Island mother charged in death of daughter

ROOSEVELT, NY Police have charged 20-year-old Shawnta Montgomery, of Roosevelt, with first-degree manslaughter.

Police responded to her Hudson Avenue home at around 9:10 a.m. Friday for an aided case involving her baby.

Her toddler, Dishawna Montgomery, was pronounced dead at Nassau University Medical Center less than two hours later. The autopsy showed that Dishawna died of a lacerated liver.

Detective Lt. John Azzata said Montgomery is 7 months pregnant. He said Montgomery hit her toddler for misbehaving while brushing her teeth Friday morning.

Montgomery, who was arrested Sunday, faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted.
