Elderly man drives wrong-way on Taconic

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. No one was injured and the man was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.

Police say they believe he suffers from dementia, but it's unclear why he was driving early Sunday morning.

State police say the North Carolina man started out in the southbound lane of the Sprain Brook Parkway at I-287, then merged onto the Taconic parkway. He was stopped about 4 a.m. in Mount Pleasant.

In July 2009, Diane Schuler was driving a minivan the wrong-way on the Taconic when she crashed and killed herself along with seven other people. Four victims were children.

The man in Sunday's wrong-way incident has not been arrested.
