NY Port Authority approves new toll system

NEW YORK The agency's board of commissioners on Thursday authorized the final design and construction of the $175 million system at its existing toll plazas.

No date to implement cashless tolling has been set. But officials say cashless tolling will reduce idling and emissions.

For now, drivers can continue paying with cash or E-ZPass.

The new system is expected to be completed in late 2014. It will replace a 12-year-old system, one of the oldest in the Northeast.

Officials say the new system will eliminate lane closures and billing problems due to faulty equipment.
