School safety agent allegedly drunk in fatal crash

BRONX Police say 25-year-old Mariely Gonzalez lost control of her 1999 Toyota Camry, traveling westbound on Orchard Beach Road in Pelham Bay Park just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday night.

The vehicle reportedly crashed into a tree -- killing 20-year-old Veronica Cintron, who was in the front seat.

Eyewitness News is told a 42-year-old back seat passenger sustained a a fractured spinal cord. He was in stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center.

Officials say Gonzalez, a school safety agent, broke her back and leg in the crash. She was also in stable condition in the hospital.

She was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, reckless driving, and refusal to take a breathalyzer.

She will be arraigned at a later date.
