Manhole explosions on Upper West Side

UPPER WEST SIDE This all started just around 4:30 a.m. Saturday after Con Ed received reports of two manholes smoking.

One was on West 94th & Columbus Ave. and the other on West 94th & 65th Street.

The explosions due to the transformer fires woke up eyewitnesses, who said they saw fire coming from the street.

Problems with manholes are common following snowfall and when salt is used to melt ice, and sometimes during heavy rainfall, according to Con Edison and FDNY.

Eyewitness News is told three vehicles were damaged. One of the vehicles caught fire and may have been parked over one of the manholes, Con Ed says.

All of the fires have been brought under control.

There are no reports of injuries.
