When you envision an auto mechanic, you probably do not picture a 5'2" college educated woman. Audra Fordin is the fourth generation owner of Great Bear Auto Body Center in Flushing, Queens.

She is the first woman in her family to run the business, and now she's take off the gloves to help Great Bear make it through the tough economy.

"Being a woman in a man's world, I've had to prove myself," said Fordin.

Audra teaches other women about cars.

She has a great name for her class, 'Women Auto Know'. The class teaches you everything you need to know about your car including how to jumpstart a battery, how to check for oil, and how to fix a flat.

The classes are free, however donations are accepted, and Fordin uses that money to fix the cars of women in need. She says the women leave her classes with even more than they ought to know.

"They feel stronger and they feel a sense of security that they know what's going on and what to expect and how to handle a situation if confronted with it," she said.

Audra has experience with that situation, saying one time a mechanic tried to take advantage of her (out of uniform) because she was out of uniform. Telling her a friend's car needed a new air pump. "Her car didn't even have an air pump," said Fordin.

The next class is set for April 17th.
