Elderly man fatally beaten and robbed

WOODBRIDGE, NJ "To do that to him, that's horrible," said neighbor Nancy Ferraro.

Ferraro just cannot believe that in her neighbor's house, they found 82-year-old James Clement dead.

An autopsy revealed that Clement died from blunt force injuries.

A friend had tried in vain to reach him.

"And the police came, went in and they found him," explained Ferraro.

Along Gordon Avenue, many people knew James Clement as "Jimmy".

He was a kind man who was often found tending to his yard.

"Wednesday afternoon he was out, ready to prune," said neighbor Cynthia Marino.

Marino lives next door and told Eyewitness News that during the summer she would see Mr. Clement working in his vegetable garden.

Jimmy always passed out the fruits of his labor to his neighbors.

"He's a very nice decent guy. He always gave us vegetables from his garden. I cannot believe something like this would happen," said Marino.

Investigators are trying to determine if this was a random act of violence, or if he was targeted.

Police revealed that Jimmy had been robbed during the murder.

Neighbors are now watching as police keep a close eye on his house, which is empty now, without James Clement.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Laughery of the Woodbridge Police Department at (732) 745-7700, or Investigator Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 634-7700.
