Feds to review NYPD efforts on language barriers

NEW YORK Next up on the audit list is New York City.

Justice Department officials say their routine audit of the NYPD will look at whether language barriers during police encounters lead to violations of civil rights laws.

Federal authorities have done similar policy reviews in the past in dozens of other police departments nationwide, but this is the first such inquiry in New York City

The NYPD says it has the largest staff of multilingual officers in the country.
