Mount Vernon High School to reopen Monday

But in doing so, they raised additional questions about the condition of the building.

School officials say engineers have determined that 50 year old construction defects played a role in the collapse.

On Monday, a wall of the auditorium crumbled. Cinderblocks rained down, crushing classrooms below.

Fortunately, school had been dismissed and there were no injuries.

When classes resume next week, the auditorium will remain closed and under construction.

Students attend classes in sections of the building that officials say are safe and where officials insist air quality is good.

But the superintendent acknowledged there are pockets of the building close to the collapse where there could be loose particles of asbestos.

That angered and some parents. They also questioned why the construction defects weren't discovered sooner despite numerous inspections.
