On Wednesday, detectives arrested Thomas Krauss, 26, of East Hills. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
Neighbor Glen Koebel's heart broke when he saw the victim's daughter get the devastating news.
"She just found out it was her mother, and she knelt to the ground and started crying and screaming, it was really horrible," described Glen Koebel.
Police say Vaghar Giae, of Roslyn Heights, using a cane, was walking along Warner Avenue when she was fatally struck.
Police had described the striking vehicle as light colored, maybe an SUV. The vehicle hit the Giae, smashed into a parked car, and then took off in broad daylight.
Two Good Samaritans stopped to try to help Giae.
"She was either carried or thrown a good distance, so they left without knowing if she was alive or dead," said Nassau County Police Detective Sgt. Richard Laurson.
