The thief had jumped into the car with Wilmer Hernandez around 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The boy's father had left the car running when he got out to use an ATM at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Third Street in Elizabeth. Two suspects approached him while he was at the ATM. One suspect jumped in the car and took off. The other fled on foot.
For two hours, the parents of the 18-month-old were beside themselves. He was found sitting in the running vehicle at the intersection of Fabyan Place and Voorhees Street. He was checked out at University Hospital before being reunited with his parents.
The boy was not harmed.
The suspect is described as a thin black man, approximately 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-1 and 30 to 35 years old. He has light skin and was wearing blue jeans and a short sleeve light blue shirt. He had a thin scruffy beard, short hair and dark eyes.
