Neighbors say the suspect lives alone, has no job and was often incoherent when he would talk to people. They say the victim is a hard working and nice guy. Both lived in basement apartments.
"I would even think if it was drug induced, that would be the only thing I could think of that would cause someone to act that way," neighbor John Morrison said. "No one in their right mind would do that in the first place."
Morrison has lived upstairs for years and says he has no idea why his unemployed loner neighbor apparently snapped around 8 a.m. Friday.
Police are still investigating what prompted the attack.
The superintendent saw the victim and called police. The man, who neighbors say works two jobs and keeps to himself, had been brutally attacked with something resembling a box cutter. Witnesses say he had slashes in long lines from elbow to wrist, across his stomach and over his head. They say he was covered in blood and barely recognizable.
"The neighbor was a young kid," Morrison said. "He seemed to be a little unstable. Like all young people, maybe it was his first apartment, and he would make noise, have parties, have the music up, people would complain."
The victim was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
