A Bergen County man awaiting trial in the decades-old slaying of his younger brother has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for having sex with an underage relative in a separate case. Joseph Barbarino of Lodi was facing a 20-year term after being convicted in February, but a judge ordered the extended sentence after Bergen County prosecutors cited his lengthy criminal record.

He must serve 42 years before becoming eligible for parole.

The 53-year-old Barbarino was arrested in November 2006 on charges he raped and killed his 6-year-old brother Vincent in 1972.

Authorities later seized evidence from his home that led them to file the child sex assault charges. Prosecutors said Barbarino assaulted the victim on several occasions while she was between 11 and 13 years old.
