Fire tears through block of stores on Long Island

A third-alarm fire tore through a block of stores and apartments on Long Island, leaving about 21 residents homeless. The fire broke out in Jerry's Pizzeria on Merrick Road in Baldwin just after 10:45 p.m. Monday.

Fire quickly spread through a strip of stores, and heavy flames shot from the building.

Seven firefighters were being treated for heat exhaustion, while some 30 residents were left homeless by the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Merrick Road was closed in both directions at Grand Avenue for the fire department activity.
