Long Island man arrested in 1993 bank robbery

MINEOLA, New York Police say 37-year-old Claud Bird was 20 years-old when he committed one of the most memorable bank robberies in the history of Nassau County.

Back in 1993, the robbery took place at an EAB bank in Lake Success, which is no longer there.

But at the time detectives called it an inside job. Two masked men were heavily armed and got away with almost a quarter of a million dollars. Cops arrested the getaway driver and a teller at the bank but police never caught up with two gunman who stole the cash.

Investigators did zero in on Claude Bird who fled to Jamaica, but then escaped extradition and returned to the United States in 1994.

Earlier this year, at a DMV in the Bronx, Bird tried to get a new drivers license and it raised a red flag that Bird had obtained a precious license by assuming the identity of a dead man.
