Van Wyck reopens following mail truck fire

KEW GARDENS The truck, which was not carrying mail, caught fire in the southbound lanes, south of Jewel Avenue, just before 4:30 a.m.

The trailer was quickly engulfed in flames.

The driver escaped the rig and was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Southbound lanes of the Van Wyck Expressway were closed, and traffic was diverted to Jewel Avenue. The truck was removed around 6:30 a.m., and all lanes reopened just before 7 a.m.
