Sheriff's officer shot during tussle with suspect

NEWARK

The officer was rushed to University Hospital in Newark following the shooting near the intersection of Broadway and Kearny Street just after 7 a.m.

Police say Officer Jason Haase was in uniform when he stopped at a Dunkin Donuts on Bloomfield Avenue to get a cup of coffee as he headed to work. Haase observed a robbery in progress and intervened, identifying himself as an officer.

A struggle ensued with a suspect, who reached for the officer's gun and pulled trigger. The bullet hit the officer in the hip, but his wallet got in the way.

The suspect fled the scene toward Route 21.

Officer Haase has been released from the hospital and is reportedly doing well.
