It seems you can do just anything with your iPhone these days. You can catch a crook, find a date and now, even save a life.
A doctor in Oklahoma has developed an app that allows you to use you cell phone to monitor your heart rate.
"Whether you're in a rural village in China, or whether you're here in the United States, or in Gotebo, Oklahoma, the cell phone infrastructure exists, so we can take advantage of the power of the iPhone," said Dr. David Albert.
With that power, Dr. David Albert has developed a revolutionary device. It looks just like a cell phone case but when snapped onto your iPhone it turns into a working E-C-G. Using two silver electrodes on the back allows us to monitor someone else's or your own, electro cardiogram.
The device could revolutionize health care. Its small enough to fit in your pocket. Perfect for E-M-T's. "They could assess very quickly the status of that victim's heart, using the device," said Dr. Albert. Heart patients can even use it, in their own homes.
"A patient can transmit their own electric cardiogram, to a health care provider, to a physician, to a critical nurse," adds Dr. Albert.
Dr. Albert revealed the "iPhone E-C-G" to the world on YouTube last week. By this weekend, he had more than 100, 000 views, hundreds of e-mails and 50 articles written about the medical breakthrough. He's hoping the exposure goes global.
"So obviously we have a great opportunity to add value to all many people all over the world," concludes Dr. Albert.
Dr. Albert hopes to have his device on the market by April. The cost should be under $100.
