Dolphin washes ashore on Long Island

WEST GILGO BEACH

The five and a half foot mammal was found on West Gilgo Beach in the town of Bablyon Thursday afternoon.

Nassau County police officers tried to keep the dolphin calm and wet while they waited for help from marine researchers from the Riverhead foundation. The officers say they were just doing what they could to save its life. The officers got so attached they named the dolphin Tobay.

It's now being looked at by researchers and won't be released until they can determine what's wrong with it.

It would likely end up beaching itself again if they released it.
