NJ apartment building fire leaves 17 homeless

ELIZABETH, New Jersey

It was not immediately clear what sparked the fire at the six-story building on Broad Street in Elizabeth, which broke out late Friday night. And further details, such as where the blaze may have started, were not immediately available Saturday morning.

The building was seriously damaged by the blaze, which was quickly contained by city firefighters.

Officials said the displaced residents were being assisted by the American Red Cross, which provided them with food, clothing and temporary housing.
