Authorities said a large section of glass and molding came loose from a 52nd floor balcony, striking glass balconies on other floors on the way down.
The glass then broke through a glass atrium on the 10th floor.
Witnesses said it sounded like an explosion.
No one was injured.
Buildings department was investigating whether the incident was weather-related.
