Soldier from Long Island killed in Afghanistan

ALBANY, N.Y. >

Theinert was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry, part 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division when he was killed on June 4.

Theinert, of Sag Harbor, volunteered for a program that allows Guard members to serve three years on active duty prior to returning to a local unit. He was originally assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Syracuse.

He received a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Albany in 2008. He is survived by his parents, James Theinert of Sag Harbor and Chrystyna Kestler of Mattituck, and a brother, James Theinert of Sag Harbor.
