ATLANTIC CITY, N.J --Atlantic City is laying off 18 police officers as it struggles with its municipal budget. The layoffs take effect Friday. The department also is demoting 30 officers. Deputy Chief Ernest Jubilee says public safety in the nation's second-largest gambling resort will not be compromised. He says the city will assign just as many officers to patrol duty as it did before the cuts.
Atlantic City is dealing with a budget deficit of about $14 million.
