Jackson police say 27-year-old township resident Charles Childs was northbound on North Chapel Hill Road when he apparently crossed the center line just before midnight Saturday. He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
No one in the township-owned ambulance - which had a three-member crew aboard and a 78-year-old woman - was hurt. And crew members tried to help Childs after the crash.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the ambulance was on an emergency call or why the woman was being taken to the hospital.
