Free yoga class in Central Park cut short by rain

NEW YORK CITY Organizers were hoping to set a world record for the largest gathering in yoga history.

The class is taught by Elena Bower, who trained celebrities Naomi Watts and Christy Turlington. Bower is the founder and co-owner of Virayoga, a yoga studio in SoHo. Her classes are usually filled.

"It's an honor, a privilege, it's amazing for sure, but now i really think it's a responsibility," said Bower. Danna Karan, Veronica Webb and DJ Spooky are expected to attend the class.

The idea came from one of Bower's students who owns an event company, called Flavorpill.

Earlier this year, 300 people gathered to practice Yoga at Museum of Modern Art. Approximately 1,500 people signed up, so the event's planner decided to go to the park so more people could attend.

The event began at 6pm but was cut short due to rain. It was open to people of all ages and skill. JetBluel provided free yoga mats to all attendees. The event also featured a performance by Buddy Wakefield, Wah!, O'Konsi Rhythms and others.

While the event is free, pre-registration is required. Registration is now closed, but you can put your name on the waitlist at flavorpill.com/win/yoga?publication=newyork
