The victim is Adlai Kugblenu, age 8 of Potomac Drive in Bernards Township.
Bernards Township Police responded to a 9-1-1 call to the victim's residence on Sunday afternoon.
Responding officers spoke with the victim's father, who said that at 2:00 p.m. he noticed his son was missing and immediately began to search for his son outside the residence and near the retention pond. When he could not find the boy, he called police.
Officers immediately began a neighborhood canvass, which included the retention pond, but could not find the boy.
Divers from the Somerset County Dive Team later located Adlai Kugblenu at the bottom of the pond, near the floating aerator fountain near the center of the pond.
Kugblenu was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
