Bear attack forces postponement of NJ fireworks

WEST MILFORD, New Jersey

Officials said Tuesday that the annual Thunder in the Highlands fireworks event originally scheduled for Friday in West Milford, about 35 miles northwest of Newark, has been postponed until July 9.

It's to be held in the same park where the bear charged the man and dog who were walking on an off-road bicycle trail.

The dog suffered serious injuries and required veterinary treatment. The hiker had minor cuts and bruises.

Patrick Carr, a black bear expert with the state Division of Fish and Wildlife, said the bear has been classified as aggressive and will be euthanized if caught.
