The incident happened at 83rd Street and York Avenue at around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The 4-year-old girl was getting on an elevator on the second floor.
She was pushing a toy stroller and walking with her mother.
The elevator door opened and the child fell about 25 feet to the basement.
Her mother rescued her and carried her out to emergency workers where they began working on the girl.
She was taken to NY Presbyterian Hospital where she is listed in stable condition.
