Junkluggers: Environmentally friendly junk removal

NEW YORK

A typical customer will call and say they have stuff in an attic, basement, or office. That's where the green truck comes in.

The truck belongs to Junkluggers, who will cart stuff away, but first they'll sort it out.

For example, items made of metal are sorted out because they can be recycled.

The goal of Junkluggers is to keep as much as possible out of the landfill.

Cardboard gets recycled, while wood may be turned into mulch.

Other items, such as furniture, toys, and working electronics, are donated to charitable organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity.

Customers receive tax deductible receipts for their donations.

Of course, there's stuff that has no value, but there's often less junk that you'd think.

The company's founder, 27-year-old Josh Cohen has filled his office with items he lugged away, all with the clients' permission to keep the pieces, such as chairs from a hedge fund.

"We cleaned out their office when things weren't going so well," said Cohen.

Cohen also has a writer's table and chairs which these belonged to a state senator, and a table and chairs from a famous writer. Cohen likes the provenance.

Clients really like the convenient, eco friendly approach.

"We felt they'd do more than just put it in the waste stream," said Elizabeth Harris, a customer. Harris used Junkluggers to clear out 60 years worth of stuff.

"We wanted it to be removed in an environmentally responsible way that's why we chose Junkluggers," Harris said.

Junkluggers is an option that beats "just taking out the trash."
