New York City officials looked on as mining for a subway tunnel was completed.

A tunnel boring machine broke through a wall of bedrock underneath the Port Authority bus terminal at 4 p.m Thursday. The new tunnel will extend a subway line to the far West side of the city.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the extension of the subway will spur the creation of new businesses, jobs and homes along the city's Hudson waterfront. He said the city spent $2.1 billion on the project.

The 7 subway line now stops at 42nd Street and 7th Avenue. It is being extended to go to 34th Street and 11th Avenue.

The subway is scheduled to open in 2013.
