Beating the heat on the beach

CONEY ISLAND

"The water is so nice and refreshing that when you lay out, it's like a breeze. It's breezy today. So it's awesome," Carmel Balan of Crown Heights said.

The beach in Coney Island was dense on Saturday.

Packed with so many people, you couldn't see where the sand ended and water began.

"It's always like this on nice hot day like this. Everybody comes to the beach," Miguel Napoleoni of Coney Island said.

"It's really hot so we said we'd come to the beach, hang out have some snacks," Jessie Rigaet of Jamaica, Queens said.

Most beachgoers ducted under umbrellas.

Others entertained themselves with a little volleyball, and by flying a few kites and building sandcastles.

Sandy Nixon won first prize the adult sculpture contest.

"We've been here since 9am this morning and we're leaving because we sandy, hot and sunburned and need showers," she said.

"My wife is waiting for me to take her to a nice cool place," Carol Schlossberg of Massachusetts said.

Beaches will probably be crowded again on Sunday. Not much relief was in the forecast. Sunday's highs were expected to reach into the low- to mid-90s, but heat indices should be slightly lower - in the high 90s.
