SPCA reports hit-and-run geese-killing

Authorities say a motorist deliberately drove into a flock of Canada geese on a suburban road, killing four of the big birds.

The Westchester SPCA said Thursday that witnesses reported the driver purposely sped up and smashed into the birds Wednesday evening in Cortlandt Manor. The animal-care group said the driver then kept going, in a green or blue Honda.

Six birds were hit and four killed.

Canada geese have become pests in Westchester County and elsewhere and are sometimes legally culled to curb the population. But they are protected by law.

The SPCA said intentionally killing one is considered animal cruelty and is punishable by up to a year in jail.
